TWENTY-TWO

I stare at my shoes as I make my way back to the locker room, deep in thought. Seeing Levi and Adam was a great way to ease the blow of Silas finding out about Lettie. I wish I’d gotten more time to catch up with them.

Silas has no idea, but I only kissed Dan behind the church to make him jealous and hopefully spur him on to make a move on me. As usual, it backfired.

I faintly hear the door to Coach Simmers’s office click shut.

Silas didn’t know about my little sister’s existence until tonight. He still might not know who she is, possibly thinking she is Dave’s daughter and my mom’s stepchild. It wasn’t my choice, but it should probably stay that way.

I’m lost in thought as I walk through the empty locker room toward the equipment room. I have to organize everything and make sure it’s ready for the game tomorrow. I would be finished already, but I wanted to go say hi to my mom, Dave, and Lettie. I cried when I saw her asleep in Dave’s arms. I had no idea how much I’d really been missing her until I saw her sweet baby face.

“Do you want to explain to me what just happened?”

I jolt, whirling around at the unexpected voice echoing through the room. Silas is standing there with his arms crossed, still in his filthy uniform.

My lungs decompress as I release the gulp of air I just inhaled. “You scared the hell out of me.”

“Why didn’t you tell me you had a stepsister?” His eyes are laser-focused on my face.

I’ve never been good at lying to Silas. This is why I wrote him the letter in the first place. This is why I avoided a phone call and especially an in-person meeting.

I can’t lie to him.

I shrug. “Is that any of your business?”

My voice is too high-pitched, and it’s shaky. I turn back around, hoping he can’t hear my heart pounding.

I can hear him stepping closer until he’s right up behind me in the equipment room.

“You have never been good at lying to me. You try it, and for some reason, you get away with it around everyone but me.” His voice is gravelly.

You will not give in to him. You can’t tell him. She’ll never forgive you.

I close my eyes before slowly turning around, deciding I have to do the only thing I can to distract him from asking about Lettie.

I take a step closer. He looks suspicious, his eyes shifting over me like he knows I’m up to something and doesn’t trust me. I take another step in his direction, now only six inches away from him. My head tilts up to make eye contact. My hands reach up to rest on his chest, which is slowly rising and falling with his breath.

His eyes have been steadily focused on my face.

“What are you doing?” he asks, sounding a little winded.

I push up on my tiptoes while also tugging down on his neck to bring him closer to level with my face.
